Being a holder of the yondan (4th level) in the Japanese art of kendo myself, Kendo Monochrome was a passion project I took on between 2014 and 2016, to wide acclaim, as I followed the kendo 'circuit' around Japan and abroad.
My aim was to photo-document my journey and also to convey my personal feeling of kendo through my artwork. High contrasts, muted colors, blurred surrounds and heavy vignettes represent the tunnel vision one experiences as they lock into battle against one's opponent, and one's self. The Canadian Kendo Federation (CKF) used some images from that project (below) for their annual calendar in 2015. Through this project, I learned a lot about myself and my craft.
